CARMEN SOUZA (voice, guitar) with Ben Burrell (piano), Theo Pas’cal (bass) and Elias Kacomanolis (drums)
+ Georgia Mancio and Jim Mullen (guitar)
“brave, extraordinarily original, … profoundly musical, … something altogether new and startling”
– Songlines UK
Portuguese-born of Cape Verdean descent, vocalist/guitarist Carmen Souza has been likened to Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Eartha Kitt and Esperanza Spalding. Mixing traditional West African rhythms with contemporary jazz and singing in the creole dialect of Cape Verde, Carmen creates her own idiosyncratic soundscape.
Engagements include Rochester, North Sea, Vancouver, Montreal, WOMAD and Red Sea Festivals; TV appearances in Italy and Germany and Monterey Jazz Festival’s first live webcast. Playing from her much acclaimed 4th album, Kachupada, her band features longtime producer, mentor, collaborator and co-composer Theo Pas’cal on bass, Ben Burrell on piano and Elias Kacomanolis on drums.
“Mullen’s own mix of funkily hard-struck notes and soft-toned fluency is always hypnotic” – The Guardian
In support Georgia collaborates with true British Jazz legend, virtuoso guitarist Jim Mullen. He has worked with Incognito, Claire Martin, Brian Auger, Mose Allison, Gene Harris, Percy Sledge, Average White Band and led his own bands – the much lauded Morrissey-Mullen and his current Organ Trio project.
